Motorcycle Riders=a Giving Community

Over and over and over again I hear riders talking the goodness within this loosely-connected diverse motorcycle community of which I am most proud to be a part. You share how giving and devoted, caring and supportive riders are. And here's the crazy part - there is NO one sort of person who rides a motorcycle. Individuals who choose to ride hit all demographics. All ages, genders, financial means, occupations, cultural roots, and every other categorization of human can be found riding. Could this mean that in truth the whole world has the capacity of being as giving and caring as the biker world? Sure does. We just have the advantage of seeing the compassion and helpfulness of riders in ACTION in our communities!

And so I consider myself a truly fortunate gal because I get to meet YOU - and hear about the way you are there for your sisters and brothers and the greater community. Thank you for seeking me out to share your stories and hear how you are reaching out! Even if you think your story is insignificant and your giving tiny, you are oh so wrong. It ALL counts. We are making a huge difference.

Sun City Carolina Lakes Motorcycle Club

I recently had the genuine fortune to get together with a couple of representatives of the Sun City Carolina Lakes Motorcycle Club. If you aren't familiar with Sun City Carolina Lakes, it is, according to its marketing pamphlet, "an active adult community for people ages 55 and better." It's located in Indian Land, SC - right at the NC/SC border. An "active adult community?" Oh my, is THAT an understatement! I might describe the place to you as something like a city-sized cruise ship with all the amenities. It's one of those overwhelming Hotel California communities where you could move in and never leave. Pretty much all there.

But these guys don't stay inside their fancy cocoon. And there doesn't seem to be much rocking chair retirement going on with this crowd either. They're on the go! Robert M instigated our meeting with an email to me saying "Sun City Carolina Lakes Motorcycle Club in Indian Land, SC has many stories, photos and sage advice to share with our brother and sister riders since most of us began riding in the mid 60's or early 70's" He asked club leader Ken O to join us in a little chat in the palatial Club House. Robert moved to SCCL 3 years ago from Jersey and Ken's been their half that long coming from Pennsylvania. The riding group started about 5 years ago casually by folks who had moved in and wanted to connect with others who shared a love of motorcycles. Pretty much like most things- just wanted to ride. Today things are more organized - very well organized with a full charter and hierarchy of leadership. Members come together for breakfast and lunch rides locally, head up to the BR Parkway frequently, and go on much longer rides (they're doing an Outer Banks Lighthouse Tour this year!) in smaller groupings. Robert and Ken shared about some wonderfully passionate individual riders who take on big rides including a retired attorney woman in her 70's who rides her Honda solo across country. They also told me about their buddy Roy who passed away in the last year and for whom they will all be going on a commemorative ride this year. Roy's family created a memorial patch that declares his favorite kind of riding: "Ride to Eat!"

(some of the Sun City Carolina Lakes MC on one of their rides to EAT....)

"We're loving our lives!," both men share enthusiastically. "You know, most of us gave up our motorcycles while we were raising our kids and now that we're retired we're able and wanting to get back to it," explained Robert. Retired truck drivers, teachers, lawyers, business professionals, military & law enforcement officers. There's about 50 on the roster of this club from 55 years old and into their 80's with most rides involving 6-15 bikes at a time. Their big annual New Year's Day ride this year had 25 bikes and about 50 people - some in cars. For that big event, they encourage anyone and everyone to go leaving Sun City Carolina Lakes at 9am sharp. "We call kickstands up and windows down and we roll!," shared Robert, as he further explained that they make the car drivers put their windows down so as to have the full ride experience!

(SCCL - a motorcycle club on the go......)

I asked these two guys about their take on the giving nature of riders. Ken said "Giving is easy. We give in appreciation for all we have received. We give to our community, we give to our country. We give to protect the freedoms we have here - the freedom to ride!" I loved his answer and I was struck by something else unique to this particular group.... While I'm a born-n-bred Carolinian who has deep roots in this community that I support, the folks at Sun City Carolina Lakes are primarily what my Mama always affectionately called "transplants" - they're from everywhere else but here. And this group of riders is just as into community outreach as anyone else who calls The Carolinas home. With members passionate about history they have taken on a huge project of protecting and preserving an historical site near them (and they will be sharing that story with us soon in another article,) support area boyscouting, get involved with the youth of the community, give to needy families. "This is our adopted home," shared Robert "and we want to do whatever we can do to help and support our new home and the communities around us!"

I am grateful that Ken and Robert took time in their very active retirement living to tell me about their group and all that they do. I was inspired by the way these folks "squeeze every drop of sweetness out of their rides" everyday! Thanks for keeping after me to share this story, Robert. I can't wait to share what you all are up to with the Buford Massacre Site!......
