The Cycle Kings Motorcycle Club of Trenton NJ has been around 42 years. The Raleigh Chapter started in 2013. When a long time member moved to the Raleigh area, he started a chapter and continued his mission to make motorcyclist be more aware of their health as part of motorcycle safety.

It's one thing to have a medical incident while driving a car, it’s a total different scenario while riding a motorcycle.  So, when the chapter started the members agreed with that concept and jumped right into starting an Annual Motorcycle Safety and Community Health Day.

We started in January for a May event. We met with Capital Powersports Honda in Wake Forest to obtain a venue for the event. The General manager was very receptive to the idea and worked with us to use the dealership, as well as areas for CPR/First Aid Training if needed. We contacted many local medical organizations for their participation. But we found that we started too late and we didn’t realize that it was Mothers Day weekend.

This year, our 2nd year we changed the date and started in November. We will continue this until we reach the following objectives:

  1. To have several Health organizations available for the riders to talk to concerning subjects such as prostate, colon, and breast cancer and screening, different methods to include physical fitness into their lives to promote good health.
  2. To have at least one member of each motorcycle club in the Raleigh/Durham area become trained in CPR and First Aid as well have annual update and training at this event.
  3. To make the public and riders aware of motorcycle safety.
  4. To have a Bloodmobile available each year at this event.

Below is a list of Contacted organizations, Some took part in the event last year and some have pledged to participate in this year’s event:
·       North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program and MSF instructors.
·       Tai Chi for Health Instructors.  Norma Ferrell and Rita Shilanko
·       Personal Trainer Travanni Jette.
·       Brothers and Sisters of Rex. Breast Cancer, Prostate and Colorectal Cancer Awareness
·        First Aid and the Biker. Faith and Curt Boogey. (C.I.A. MC)
Promotional Information from SNELL Memorial Foundation
B.U.D.D. s Bikers United to Defend Driving Safely
A Representative from Moto Mark Precision Maneuvering School (Tentative)
American Red Cross Blood Drive (if we get enough pledges to donate)

This year we are growing a little bit more. We are currently seeking pledges for Blood Donors. We need 35 pledges to donate blood to the American Red Cross. Please call 609-915-2484 to sign up.

So we hope to see this event grow more and more every year. It’s the type of event where you don’t have to spend the entire day. You can take a ride with your group, hang out for a little while, gather some information, and continue riding on that day. All we can hope for is some good riding weather.

So come out and support our Motorcycle Safety and Community Health Day!

something old, something new,

something borrowed, something blue

...No, there's no bride ... just using the saying to cover some things:

Old - You've heard, I know, but you'll be hearing it again and again because we're celebrating like a coop full of hens who've all just laid eggs. This year marks our 5th anniversary as and we're proud to have made it through some pretty tough economic waves as well as some uncalled-for insults by unprofessional professionals who don't know how to play nice. We're tough and we believe in what we are creating here. Plus, we're just tickled to be a voice for riders here in The Carolinas (and beyond) and thrilled to be connected with YOU! We're FIVE YEARS OLD and we're celebrating...

New - As part of our anniversary celebration, we're beginning some new things here in your weekly ezine. The Calendar Girl Week Planner will appear in The Carolina Rider Scene every week during the busy part of riding season. Check her out to see a little more detail about some events and just a short list of highlights but make sure you go to the full online Events Calendar for full listings. Another newbie to this ezine: TCR Classifieds are ready to receive your listings! Got a bike to sell? Got some extra parts you'd like to turn back into money and help fellow riders with their build projects? Got a motorcycle-related business you want to promote in the classifieds until you have a little more change for a full professional ad in TheCarolinaRider? Contact us to get your classified started today!

Borrowed - These are not really borrowed. They're just not by the writers you see here regularly. Poni Princess (who is a regular member of our creative team,) sent out a bit of a challenge in her recent column and called folks to tell us about their riding boots. And .... we got a pair! Bill Hanna and Alvin "Cattman" Cadlett sent us their stories and we're happy they've loaned us their leather-soled memories because it makes us think about our own favorite footwear. Plus, they sent some cool photos to entice us too!

Blue - We got word recently that there will not be a Thin Blue Line ride this year. The ride has been largely supported in the past and many of you have been regulars at this ride for several years so we know you'll be looking for it. As a past promoter of the event, we're sorry to see it go but know that there's a season for such things.

The saying that's been used for the month of March, I think is "In like a lion and out like a lamb." But as far as I can see, March is coming in like a lion who changes into a lamb every other day or so. Enjoy the SUNNY days as well as the cool quiet grey ones now ... because soon enough we'll be wishing for a respite from THE HEAT!

I'm on Facebook ... "friend me!"

Hello all my fellow bikers in The Carolinas! Calendar Girl here with a short list plus some added info of a sampling of some of the upcoming events for this week. Remember, this is just a taste of what's on our full online Event Calendar so make sure you always check for all that's happening ... and get your ride on!

Bike nights this week:

Boneyard Tavern BIKE NIGHT - Monroe, NC

Other Events and Rides:

Friday, 07 March, 2014 ... Daytona Beach Bike Week - Daytona, FL

Saturday, 08 March, 2014 ... Bare as You Dare - Waynesville, NC
Last year’s "Bare as you Dare" event brought in a great number of mostly nude bikers who raised $3600 for heating the homes of the elderly. I spoke with ‘Hacksaw’ about this year’s event and he said they have lightened the restriction of just having ‘Bikers in Boxers’. (What???  You’re telling bikers to put their clothes back on??!!) This year you can wear clothes for the police escorted parade through town. But Hacksaw did assure me “We perform a special treat for the onlookers Downtown.” This you gotta go see!!

Riding Gear Workshop - Hickory, NC
Von Zipper Benefit Poker Run - Pinehurst, NC

We've got a Pair for you!

Check out two great stories about Riding Boots that came to us in response to Poni Princess's own tale. The stories can be found online now and we thank Bill Hanna of Virginia and Alvin "Cattman" Cadlett of NC for sharing not only their own tales but some photos as well!

#1 - Whatcha got for Riders?

"We continue to build on our bike nights with free live music, drink and food specials, and always a damn good time.  We’ve never been about having the most bikes, but we consistently get the coolest rides, from old pan and shovel heads to Trumpets and newer, built baggers.  It’s really a free for all and all about two wheels.  Come one, come all.  We even have a dedicated Euro bike night on the first Tues of every month.  It’s become wildly popular.   Our regular bike night folks are like family.  Shit, it’s been close to 10yrs since we got this jig going.  Conversations typically range from the hot new bartender to what cam is best, to ignition problems, to fucking world politics.  You never what you might see/hear at Mac’s, but the one consistent is really good grub."

#2 - Makin' it Personal for us

"Wynn Davis is our Operating Partner.  We opened our first Mac’s back in 2005. We all enjoy riding and were looking for a place to go with great comfort food, ice cold beer and a fun atmosphere with live music.  It really didn’t exist, so we converted an old transmission shop on South Blvd into our first Mac’s Speed Shop.  We’ve been ridin’ bikes, eating great food, and drinking really good beers ever since.  I mean what goes better with kick ass Q than ice cold beer? We currently stock over 300 selections at each restaurant.  However, our employees are the ones who make Mac’s so great.  We have a fun group of folks."

#3 - What's Up? - News, Honors, Events

"We won 1st Place in Sauce at the last Memphis in May. It’s the Super Bowl of Swine with over 250 International teams competing. It’s the best of the best in the world of BBQ.  Our competition crew continues to rack up the awards and we’re really proud of that.  It’s one thing for us to say that our food is good, but when the Kansas City BBQ Society and Memphis BBQ Network say so, it’s a real tip of the cap. We’ve had a lot of copy cats since we’ve opened, but none who can tout the awards and accolades Mac’s has received.  We also take great pride in getting involved in the communities we serve.  From bottling our Colemans Home Sauce, which all proceeds go to help the homeless, to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, to Urban Ministries, we strive to make a positive impact."

#4 - Tell us Something we Need to Know - advice to riders?

"Nah, we’re not much on giving advice.  Might be because we’re not really good at taking it either.  We used to hear a lot of  'Go fast, take chances,'… but we’ve all slowed down from those days quite a bit.  No need for all that now.  How about the traditional, 'Ride safe'."

#5 - What else?

"Well, not to toot our horn to loudly because we’re humble about it, but we did win that award for World Champion in Sauce at the Memphis in May competition. And we started cooking BBQ in a restaurant housed in an old transmission shop on South Boulevard near Uptown Charlotte and today, people can sauce up their own pig pick’ns and cook-outs by picking up a four-pack of sauce that includes Mac’s Red BBQ (Western/Piedmont NC style), Mac’s Vinegar (Eastern NC style), and SC mustard.

In addition to being a great restaurant and fun place to hang out, Mac's has a HUGE beer selection. We offer unique Pilsners, Wheat, Ales, Browns, and yes, we still serve beer in a can for all you traditionalists. We have over 30 HIGH OCTANE varieties alone! Most of our selections are from local or regional breweries. If you are a beer aficionado or even admit to being a beer snob and want to sample one of over 300 varieties your palate will be very pleased with what's on tap today at Mac's!

Hope all the good readers of The Carolina Rider will check out our newly launched website at and like us on Facebook.  We always have something fun going on and these places are the quickest/easiest ways to inform our patrons…and of course, The Carolina Rider."

almost ....

Yes, it's almost time to ride. Wasn't Sunday a great day? Sunshine and good warmth. Then we get Winter back again. It's like a bike that just won't crank - Spring's trying to catch hold but it's just not quite got it. Soon it will stay70 degree days and we will be riding with our hair in the breeze .... those of you who have hair!!

Save the Date!

A couple of things I want to remind you to put on your calendars. First is The Ligitator poker run. This will be the second year that The Law Offices of Jason E. Taylor and The Carolina Rider have come together to offer this fun ride. The date is June 1st and the ride leaves out of Blue Ridge Harley in Hickory. A lot of fun last year and there's talk of a prize package of $2,000!!

I also want you to know about a new ride led by the Shriners and sponsored by Met Life. The date for this HUGE charity ride is October 4th and plans are sounding really exciting so save the date!

Think about warm weather. We'll be there soon.....
