The Birds and The Bees ... and the Weatherman
My neighbor had 3 bee hives at the beginning of this hard Winter. Peeking in one warm day last week, she confirmed what she already knew - she now has only 2 hives of bees. In the deep middle honeycomb of the deathly-quiet hive she found the deceased bodies of the last fighters for the colony.
When Winter arrived just a couple months ago, I had 20 chickens. Today I have 18.
"The coldest Winter in decades" the meteorologists keep saying.

Hmm, you don't have to look to the birds, the bees, or the weatherman to know what every biker is already bitchin' about: It's been cold, damn cold and we're ready for warmer air. Some of us went South to find Daytona's sun and found, as Jon shares below, more of the same cold, cold Winter.
But the air's warming up, isn't it?! And it won't be as long as it has been.

Some of us ride year-round in all weather. Some of us won't consider getting on a bike till the thermometer hits 85 degrees! Most of us fall somewhere in between. WHAT ABOUT YOU? Write in and share your weather needs as a rider....and that includes those of you who get called "passenger" or "rides on the back" or "backrest."I WANNA HEAR FROM YOU ALL!

Until it's warm enough for even the most sensitive fair-weather riders, there's still some biker and biker-related activities to give your motor a little heat. For gals only....The Women's Garage Party at Harley-Davidson of Charlotte is still taking reservations. Sign up now for the March 19th event that was highlighted in last week's Carolina Biker Scene Newsletter. For everyone....check out this weekend's Biker Brunch at The Tilted Kilt (at the corner of Hwy 49S and Carowinds Blvd) in Charlotte, H-D of Charlotte's Pot 'o Gold Party (SEE THE ST PATTY'S GREEN FLYER BELOW!) this weekend in Matthews, or the Chilly Chili ride in Concord on March 20th.

And please do regularly check out our CALENDAR for more of what's happening in your neck of the woods. If you don't see anything in your area, perhaps you can help us out with that. Our arms are long and our desire is steadfast in our mission to reach out into every corner of The Carolinas, but, honestly, we're not getting to you all YET. We will. Time will tell. Look how far we've come in just 6 months: over 10,000 of you have signed up for our newsletter. In the month of February 2010, we had over 216,000 hits to our website. Very, VERY cool!

Thanks for coming to see us whenever you can and please, please become an active Carolina Rider by LISTING YOUR EVENTS, SHARING YOUR PICTURES AND STORIES, and WRITING ME!

The Carolina Rider Sponsored Event

The Carolina Rider dot com and Mad Dog Custom Cycles is sponsoring the upcoming Gumball Rally on Saturday March 27th that begins and ends at Knights Stadium in Fort Mill, SC (Exit 88 off of I-77) and benefits the Tega Cay Lions Club that does lots of good in their community. You'll get a gumball at each stop and you can cash in the gumballs for 5 tickets for each ball. There will be a drawing and half the fees collected - up to $1,000 - will be given away! The more tickets you have, the more chances you have to win the big money. Ride stops include Cox Harley-Davidson in Rock Hill, Alpha Motorsports in Rock Hill, Matthews Fun Machines in Matthews, Charlotte Honda in Charlotte, Harley-Davidson of Charlotte in Matthews, Mad Dog Custom Cycles in Lake Wylie, The Tilted Kilt in Charlotte, and Steve's Bar and Grill in Tega Cay. You can get a suggested map to follow or go your own way. It's $20/rider with FBO at 10am and LBO at 1pm. I intend to do what I can to make this a fun and successful event and hope to see you there too.

Quick little Links, Stats, 'n News to chew on...

  • Kathy McCormack with Associated Press reports that a New Hampshire man is charged with beating his landlord to death apparently because he was "obsessed with getting a Harley-Davidson motorcycle." McCormack further writes that he "assumed his identity and stole his pickup truck" to "trade it for the bike."
  • Seth Enslow recently set a new world record for the longest jump for a Harley-Davidson. The 183 foot jump occured in Australia.
  • .... This new product just won the "dealer's choice Award at the International Powersports Dealer Expo Kickstart New Product Contest. It's an eco-friendly, semi-disposable, and ultra-compact (resembles a DVD case that you can stick in your pocket!) type of cover that protects the top half of motorcycles (or scooters) from sun, rain, snow, dirt, dust, and debris ... and is recommended for unexpected weather changes.

We get it wrong sometimes. And wishes to apologize if we've misspelled, wrongly-dated, or otherwise screwed up your event in our calendar. In order to not miss anything, we search high and low and admittedly, sometimes lower-than-low to find what's happening in the Carolina motorcycle world. We get events from you, from picked up flyers, from dealerships and rider groups, from word-of-mouth, and from second and third hand sources here and there. And, yes, we have infrequently misspelled some names and left out critical digits in phone numbers. Overall, we think we're doing pretty good but, according to Ward, who wrote us this week, we made a mell-of-a-hess of the Chilly Chili Ride when it got stuck on March 13th instead of its actual date, March 20th. Our mistake. Thanks, Ward, and anyone else who can help keep us straight!

Daytona Beach Bike Week was truly different this year. The crowds were smaller than in the past. Was it the ecomony? Was it the COLD weather? Was it both? Whatever it was, the crowds were off. Pretty much all the same Daytona stuff going down: bike shows, long lines of traffic down main street, cops writing tickets. Yes all the things we love about bike week except - did I say it was COLD?! Highs in the 50's and that was late in the afternoon so riding in the morning was in the 40's. Wind-chill, wind-chill...that's cold on a bike!!! I guess the vendors selling cold-weather gear racked up this year though. I know I contributed my share to their earnings!
The really good news is that we are finally getting some of our own warm weather in the Carolinas and it's time to ride. So Daytona Bike week is in the record books this year as one of the lightest of crowds and we are really close to having good riding weather... so stay tuned, Carolina Riders, the fun is just about to begin....!
Enjoying The Ride,
