The Little Weather Quickie for the Week of March 12-19, 2012

Monday 67 cloudy, Tuesday 76 am showers, Wednesday 76 am clouds, Thursday 77 m-sunny, Friday 74 p-cloudy, Saturday 75 p-cloudy, Sunday 72 iso t-storms, Monday 75 m-sunny (as per on Monday 3/12/12)

I'm packing to head out for Daytona tomorrow morning and trying to get through this stack of to-do's on my desk so that I can take the rest of the week to enjoy bike week; therefore, today I'm offering you this little periodic feature of your weekly e-mag, The Carolina Rider Scene,

Free Ride!

If the Spring-like weather calls you to the road this month and you've got an itch to ride someWHERE rather than just to ride aimlessly, here are a few SC and NC options I've come across in my email files...

Outer Banks, NC March 15-18 TASTE OF THE BEACH (fresh seafood, fine wines, brewery tours)

Woodford, SC March 16-17 HUMMINGBIRD FESTIVAL (this one includes a car and motorcycle show!)

Pinehurst/Southern Pines/Aberdeen, NC March 22-25 PALUSTRIS FESTIVAL (cultural arts fest - visual, literary, performing arts)

Hartsville, SC March 23-25 RENOFEST BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL (guitar & banjo & band competitions, concerts, barbeque, hoe down!)

Columbia, SC March 23-25 PALMETTO SPORTSMEN'S CLASSIC (huntin', fishin', and other outdoorsy stuff!)

Folly Beach, SC March 24-25 SEA AND SAND FESTIVAL (apparently lots of music and food plus art and beachy fun)

Laurenburg, NC March 30-31 STORYTELLING FESTIVAL (tall and short tales that make you laugh, sing, and cry they say!)

Concord, NC March 31 VIETNAM VETERANS HOMECOMING CELEBRATION March 31 (an event created because the Vets of yesterday did not get the warm welcome home that the Vets of today do - music - Charlie Daniels/George Clinton/Oakridge Boys, ceremonies, Rolling Thunder.)

... an eclectic little section dedicated to eclectic items sent in by our eclectic readers!

Email from Geoff, the Secretary of Durham HOG wrote: "I posted our 26th annual charitable fundraising event on your calendar a while back, but the poster was not available at the time.  This is a little late, but if you could include the attached poster in the newsletter that comes out this week, Durham HOG would appreciate it.  If the weather cooperates, this will be a pretty big event - live music, Ron the Ref as MC, revised bike classes (not just HD this year), chili contest, free hot dogs & soft drinks, vendors.  The band - Crossoverdrive - rocks."

Early Registration DISCOUNT EXTENDED to Midnight March 19th

SAVE THE DATE: Ray of Hope, April 29, 2012

Jay "Hollywood" Greenfield sent me the words below written by Jamie Huffman, mutual friend of Ray Miesbauer who passed on this past month. I got to know Ray myself as a performer for Lake Wylie Music Fest in 2010 and happy to have known him even if briefly. The photo below taken at Lake Wylie Music Fest is Ray doing what he loved to do - sing and play and be with good people! I joined that with Jamie's words as a "save the date" flyer for the benefit that the Independent Benefit Ride group is making happen in April. More info and their official flyer to come I'm sure and I know it's to include good music and good times!

Welcome to Applebees, Tom Johnson Camping, and Dale Folwell for Lt. Governor!

I'd like to extend my warm welcome to the following new and returning Sponsors of The Carolina Rider...

Tom Johnson Camping (where you get trailers like the one we're using to transport our bikes to Daytona this week!)

Dale Folwell for Lt Governor Campaign (you'll be hearing more about this guy who believes he can turn NC around)

Applebees (returning again for this riding season!)

May you enjoy your week!

"Go on now, squeeze out every drop of sweetness on your ride today!"
Fancy Free, Site Editor

I'm on Facebook ... "friend me!"

"My Girl takes us back to a time when we wore our white t-shirts with our jeans cuffed at the bottom with our black engineer boots."

The owner of this sweet 1952 Panhead says this is his girl. This old girl is as clean as a whistle and oozes with class. Mike tells me he has had his girl for 20 years and picked her up cheap from a guy who could not kick her to life. Ever since then they have been inseparable. For My Girl this is her third make over. At one time she sported Ape Hangers and bright yellow paint scheme in tribute to John Lennon. At another time she was a cool blue-green bad ass up swept fishtails. Now she is a refined lady but don't let that fool you, she will still get down the road.

I spotted Mike's Pan at the Easyriders show here in Charlotte this past January. I thought as I saw it I had to get the info on this bike. Mike works at Indian Motorcycles, so we met there and Carolina Vicki starting flashing the camera. Talking to Mike I could see the pride he takes in his girl. I really like to see that relationship between a biker and his baby!

Mike took what was old and made new ... and in a lot of aspects, he made this Panhead better than new.

He converted the electrical system to a Cycle Electronics twelve volt system. She sports an S & S E carb and she fires on the first or second kick! The paint is kick ass on this bike. The Bronco Bronze metallic is flawless and you don't really notice the black side panels on the fenders until the sunlight lights them up!

My Girl takes us back to a time when we wore our white t-shirts with our jeans cuffed at the bottom with our black engineer boots. There were hot rod cars cruising the streets, drive in joints, rock and roll music and on yeah, that Brylcreem or Wild Root in our hair. It was a time when juke boxes jumped! A time when you showed off your bike or hot rod every Friday and Saturday night and when the weekend was over you were already looking forward to doing it all over again the next weekend! It was magic!

I guess you can tell I really liked "My Girl" and talking to Mike about her was a pleasure! She's as clean as a whistle and sharp as a knife!

Daytona Dreamin'

I'm headed to Daytona. It's finally that time of the year. I plan on sending regular update via my iPhone so keep your eyes on the facebook page.

Today, I would like to welcome a couple of new advertisers. Dale Folwell is running for the position of Lt. Governor, is and has been a great friend to the motorcycling community for some time and he seeks our support in getting elected. Go to his web site and check him out.

Tom Johnson Camping has joined us. They will be a sponsor of the upcoming Thin Blue Line Ride and we are proud to help them get some exposure to more riders.

And lastly, we welcome back Applebee's. Don, the GM in Matthews is a rider and we are proud to have them back!

When we get back from Daytona, we've got our sites set next on the spring Charlotte CBA Swap Meet. THE BIG RIDE bus of The Carolina Rider will be set up there. I think maybe we will be giving away a scooter....

See you next week!
