SHAKEY'S PIZZA AND SENSUAL RIDES

Driving (or riding in) a car is like watching the cooks at the old Shakey's Pizza once on South Boulevard (and its eastside parallel universe Independence Blvd.) When I was a kid (ok, who else was a kid at Shakey's once upon a ragtime?) ... Shakey's was a big deal, a 1960's Friday night family event that was like an oregano-scented Magic Kingdom on a much smaller scale and way closer to hometown NC. It was cool because they had a full Dixieland band or sometimes just the mesmerizing player piano, because there was a certain special-occasion-feel to the place with the striped-dressed and straw-hatted servers, and because you got to watch pizzas being made through a giant picture window that was one wall of the kitchen. I was one of the kids who wanted to stay nose-printing the glass for as long as possible "almost" feeling the dough being shaped, "just about" close enough to feel the circles of dough flying into the air with the expert spinning toss by the pizza cooks, "imagining" myself painting the bright red sauce on with the giant paint brushes.

Shakey's

And compared to an automobile-enclosed ride, riding a motorcycle is like being one of those Shakey's pizza cooks rather than the kid shut out of their experience and just dreaming on the other side of a glass wall. To be on a bike is a full-out sensual experience - sometimes to the overload point! I'm not "almost" or "just about" or "imagining" being deep in the air, the scents, the feels. I AM the scene itself! Soaked deep into every cell of my body is the experience of the road and the full shape of her curves absent the cushioning that most cars have. I am mentally fully-present without the mindless here-to-getting-there route I often take when driving a car. Traffic sounds and voices on the street or in yards I pass become life's soundtrack. Just-cut grass and yard onions as well as cookouts, coffee shops, and some rather-not-smell-them-scents are this rider's aromatherapy. Being a rider is being alive. Especially at this time of year! Springtime scents, the thawing warmth of sorely-missed sunshine, the glad sounds of friends sharing an al-fresco beer, and the rainbow colors all around inspire me and clear my Winter-weary brain.

KIBBLES 'N BITS

Quick little Links, Stats, 'n News to chew on....

Harley-Davidson for sale?: No, not a bike...the company. Rumor of the corporation being sold in some leverage buyout situation started circulating last week and according to Reuters stocks went up 6% with simply speculation fueling their climb. H-D has been traveling the same hard road that the rest of the country has been stumbling on this past year struggling to get out of first gear.

Olds from The Beach: It's not "news" really....it's "olds"....we've heard it and most of us are kindof tired of talking about it. However, The Sun News reported this past week that Harley-Davidson pulled out of the North Myrtle Beach rally event this year after seeing a flyer that made the corporation as well as the local dealer feel like their customers might be harrassed and at the very least unwelcome.

Bobbers and Weavers: The Sierra Vista Herald reported in the past week that there's a bill circulating in the Arizona House proposing that motorcyclists who are stuck in stopped traffic in Maricopa County can weave to get around conjestion.

BC Bikers: And from across the big pool of water, CBC News reports that the government of British Columbia is making some adjustments to motorcycle laws after a B.C. Coroners Service death panel review. Recommended changes to laws include a graduated-licence program for new riders, mandatory industry certification for all motorcycle helmets, a zero-tolerance blood-alcohol policy for new riders, different-coloured licence plate for motorcyclists who hold a learner's licence, possible change in standards for training schools and instructor certification, and expanding the scope of coroner's investigations involving motorcycle deaths to include more data and compile it in a specific section for better analysis in the future.

LOOSE TALK

People. My work is about people. I love motorcycles but it's the people connections that probably drive me more. I enjoy meeting and getting to know everyone when I'm out. But you probably know that - you see me running around wherever there's a crowd. It's my life. My wife says that when she needs to find me, she just watches the feathers on my hat bobbing above the crowd.

Well, I'm plugging some rides this week that have to do with the people involved and people who are the focus of the causes. As one of the sponsors of this Saturday's Gumball Rally, I've had the opportunity to meet and work with some new people and hope for all involved that the weather gives us all a break and you will all come out for Carolina Motor Madness and ride the Gumball Rally! (see flyer above)

Because of my friendships with some members of our Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and Sherrif's Department, I have a soft spot for those who serve us in these roles. And I'm always in awe of their efforts to protect riders when they escort a ride. To watch their precision choreography from intersection to intersection and trading off lead on the straightaways is indeed something to appreciate. So, this year's Thin Blue Line Ride is one of my highly recommended events for 2010 and I am grateful that we, The Carolina Rider.com, are a sponsor. Last year, there were 500 motorcycles in the 1 1/2 hr police-escorted ride. This year we are anticipating 800 bikes. If you have never experienced an 800 bike police-escorted ride, where law enforcement blocks off all roads and cars sit and wait on you for 30 minutes, it is truly an experience that you should not miss. We'll have our tent up at the finish and giving away a chance to win gift certificates and prizes.

One other ride I highly recommend putting on your ride schedule is the 8th Annual Ride for the Kids with Keith Larson. As many of you know, Keith is a radio personality on WBT-am and is an avid rider who is very passionate about helping the underpriviledged. Through his radio show, he often plugs this Ride and as a result it tends to be very heavily attended. It is truly a good cause with a lot of energy put into creating the perfect ride and every year they change it up just enough to keep it interesting. Keith's a good guy I'm glad to know. Join us on the 24th of April in the parking lot at Matthews Fun Machine for a grand ride!
