"Check out Guitar George he knows all the chords ... mind, he's strictly rhythm, he doesn't want to make it cry or sing....and an old guitar is all he can afford when he gets up under the lights to play his thing."
Dire Straits ... Dictionary Definition= a state of extreme distress ... Personal Definitions=lost jobs and businesses, starting over, simplifying life, unemployment checks, foreclosures, overwhelming debt, re-prioritizing ... Current World Definition= what the financial higher-ups and the talking heads of the idiot box are fond of calling "the worst economic crisis since The Great Depression."
Years ago when Hurricane Fran painfully busted up Wrightsville Beach, my dearest friend lost her home and life's possessions including all that she had left to tangibly remember her mother who passed away when we were in high school. Her husband, pets, and she were all fine but water and wind destroyed material connections in life. That experience of catastrophoic loss put her through some days of dire straits but, in a strange way, losing everything gave her a chance to completely start over fresh and different; a back-handed gift that she would never have given herself. Today her grasp around the "stuff" of life is much gentler and her story inspires me to loosen my grip on things.
The last couple of years have brought many of us screeching into dire straits. Most of us are scaling down and spending lighter. Some of us have started over again after years of prospering in known and comfortable positions. And (present company included) there are those of us who are overhauling and re-creating our lives, taking giant leaps into new and unproven income ventures that reflect our true values and passions in life.
Because bikes are catagorized as "luxury expenses" when it comes to hardship budgets, motorcycle-related businesses have taken painful hits. Some of those businesses remain...some just hanging on by their tire tread. Others have throttled down and thrown away the key.
Have a Ball!
Recently Jon and I had the opportunity to chat with Cougar and Michele from Cougar's in Newton, NC. With his usual big smile and genuine personality, Cougar shared how his path has led him to close his shop and go back to workin' a job he's done before to pay the bills and to catch back up in life. Whenever I hear about a personal business shutting down, my heart mourns for a dream lost. But listening to Cougar reminded me of my Wrightsville Beach friend's re-creative perspective on things. Cougar's still here. He's still riding. And he's still throwing the Biker Ball this weekend. Perhaps it can be considered a celebration of living through the tough times....for all of us who have been blown away by the hurricanes of our lives. Because, hear this: I didn't sense poor me-ness in Cougar. I saw an attitude of "when life gives you lemons, have a glass of recession-spiked lemonade and ride on!"
If you too have found yourself in dire straits, put on your "best brown baggies and your platform soles," stick Mark Knopfler 'n the boys in the cd player, and party like there's money in the bank! (With appreciation to the lyric composer and with apologies to those of you who don't appreciate The Sultans of Swing!)
THE FREE STUFF
I am on the lookout for FREE activities in The Carolinas...for myself and for you. As you look over The Riding Planner in these Carolina Bike Scene newsletters, notice that I've added the word FREE at the beginning of some listings. Watch for more to come. It's hard enough to put fuel in the tank, not to mention shelling out admission fees and so on. I hope to offer some eclectic possibilities as well as the usual biker fare and I welcome your input if you hear about a good free time!
And, speaking of input.....
Please do share with us
as we create some NEW FEATURES for our website and newsletter...
Girl Power!- a section for women by women (see more BELOW)
The Club Room - a special corner of the newsletter that'll be linked to a more detailed section of the website for riding groups, clubs, and organizations to share their information with their members (announcements and such) as well as with all readers (organization's description/purpose/contact info.)
For the Love - space to connect with riding groups and charities focused on ministry and giving. Learn about biker ministries and charitable organizations who are involved with motorcycle events.
WOMEN RIDERS! Time to Show Whatcha Got!....
1 WEEK TO GET IN YOUR STORIES, PICTURES, & THOUGHTS!
DUE DATE: Midnight, May 12th
SPECIAL WOMEN'S EDITION will be published May 18th
I am SO EXCITED by the emails I'm getting from you women. You are all INSPIRING ME toward the creation this publication!! I am still looking for the women riders of The Carolinas to share stories, photos, and thoughts about your experiences with motorcycles. As you may have heard, May is Women Rider Month. And even tho we don't need a special month set aside for us - because we already know we're pretty damn special! - it's still a good motivator for good things! And as it happens, I am happily in the midst of creating more than one good thing celebrating women who ride motorcycles:
So, for our special May newsletter, here's my request to you Carolina women out there who ride ...or want to ride!:
Write something!... something real, something fresh, something that's all YOU!
Write about your riding experience/s....when you first rode a bike...how you learned....whether you ride your own or ride "on the back,"....what and where you ride and just about anything else ride-related you want to share. AND BE CREATIVE! Write a poem, write a paragraph. Write a story or a list of things you love about riding. You don't have to use full sentences or proper grammer. You can send in photos or words or both. Don't stress about it....just share! Put your pen to the page and see what flows out....or perhaps you'll put your fingers on the keyboard and watch the words that get created on screen....either way, just PLEASE WRITE! You have a story. I have a story and I'll be sharing mine too. And again, I'd love to see that awesome creativity that women are blessed with rather than just words on a page. Express yourself and have fun doing it! Send it to FancyFree
QUESTION OF THE WEEK for the week of May 4th, 2010:
Where do you ride when money's tight?
"Go on now, squeeze out every drop of sweetness on your ride today!"

Lasix for Vets
Several charitable organizations have teamed up to create an event and service to wounded veterans that'll put things in a whole new perspective: "Los Angeles, CA, April 28, 2010- Motorcycle Charity Associates announced today that they will welcome a lucky group of wounded veterans to Los Angeles for free vision treatment and a "Hero's Night Out" at the 2nd Annual Stars & Stripes Event on the grounds of the Playboy Mansion on Saturday, May 15th. Severely injured young war veterans from Texas military bases, Fort Hood and Fort Sam Houston will get complimentary vision correction surgery with LASIK, or the implantable contact lenses and they and their caregivers will enjoy a few days in L.A. while recovering from surgery before the event at the Playboy Mansion." For more about this unique charitable effort, check out www.motorcyclecharityassociates.org, http://www.HeroesNightOut.org, & www.StarsandStripes10.com
Wednesday Night Bike Nite Wars!
It looks like the 3 apparent winners of the Greater Charlotte Area "Wednesday night Bike Nite Wars" are the Suck Bang Blow and Quaker Steak rivalry and Easy Eddie's. That doesn't mean that there aren't other bike nites on Wed nights because of course there are....it just means the highest numbers are hitting these 3 venues. The SBB and QS&L rivalry seems to be a draw so far. I'll keep my eye on it and keep you posted. Easy Eddie's has a good and steady crowd and is a great place to hang. Catch me somewhere on Wednesday night and say hello. And let me know your bike nite choice for the Wednesday Night Champion!
Until then, keep the shiney side up!!
