Expanding our Reeeeach....

Salisbury and Greensboro, North Carolina checked in this past week to make sure we had some current bike events on our calendar. Much further South, I've recently heard from folks in the Columbia, South Carolina area about their motorcycle happenings. Way over on the coast, I hear-tell there's lots goin' on on that side of the world - while up in the hills there's even more good rider gatherings to know about. And I don't know 'bout you, but it's great to be in The Carolinas!

"Nothin' could be finer than to be in Carolina" and I reckon that's why it's a rarity to find folks like me who were born and raised here! Have you heard? Have you noticed? Everyone's moving here!! Every other person I meet seems to be from Ohio or New York, from Florida or Indiana. Many have an extensive history of living in a variety of locales while I've got the shorter list of addresses - mostly in Charlotte, NC with the exception of college time just over the SC border. So, as one of the few true natives, I've taken on the proud duty as unofficial but sincere welcome lady....because I am thrilled to have you here! You bring new ideas and fresh energies to our states....and The Carolinas are indeed a perfect choice for your home!

Remember the episode of The Andy Griffith Show when the guy comes to town calling everyone by name but no one knows him? He keeps saying that Mayberry is his hometown and Barney gets all twisted up paranoid, and Clara's lips are all pursed tight and judging, and the gossip at Floyd's is nastier than the taste of Bea's kerosene pickles!? You eventually learn that he chose to move there because of all the stories he was told by his buddy who grew up in Mayberry; because he knew it was the best place to be.

From the mountains to the coast, from foothills to sandhills, and from Upstate to low country, we've got something special here in The Carolinas .... and the riding is diverse and you can find good places to ride throughout the seasons. And so we are here to reach out around these two grand states. The Carolina Rider has a proud and much-sought after home and our reach is getting wider and deeper. We intend to be shaking hands with every Carolina Rider we can find as time goes on. I say all this to glow a bit about the continual expansion of The Carolina Rider's reach. CaRL's getting around and touching lives and that's something we want to celebrate!

"Go on now, squeeze out every drop of sweetness on your ride today!"

KIBBLES 'N BITS

Quick little Links, Stats, 'n News to chew on....

  • On Tuesday, June 8, the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Myrtle Beach's motorcycle ordinances regarding helmets stating that the laws are invalid because they are pre-empted by state law. As usual, opinion is mixed. And, unsurprisingly, while many riders are glad, many have "given up on" Myrtle Beach after being shunned over the past few years. Time .... and future Myrtle Beach attitudes.... will tell.

The Daily Ride ... Ride to Work Day THIS MONDAY June 21st!

According to the non-profit organization that promotes this international day of the year, it's much more than just seeing how many folks would ride to work if encouraged to do so. It's a way to draw the world's attention to how motorcycles benefit the greater good. Here what they say...

Ride your motorcycle or scooter on this day to demonstrate:

  • The number of motorcyclists to the general public and to politicians.
  • That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life.
  • That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities.
  • That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation.
  • That motorcycling is a social good

LOOSE TALK

Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach.... Yes, almost every intelligent human knew that it didn't sound right for Myrtle Beach to make their own helmet law in a state where there is no helmet law. Every one except the geniuses on Myrtle Beach's City Council. As you have heard by now, and see in Kibbles and Bits above, the state Supreme Court over turned the city's helmet law.
The Elmer Fuds on city council wanted to get rid of the wascally biker wabbits sooo bad they started making up stuff, like unconstitutional laws.
For me at least MB has done it's damage. Yes I'm a biker but I'm also a man with a family and kids and yes at one time we would go to MB - with the entire family in tow - a month or two after bike week for that long-awaited family vacation. The city of Myrtle Beach has spoken. They want bikers out. I heard them ... but so did my family. I can find a different place to go for my family vacations from now on.

Until then, keep the shiney side up!!
