Q. What is this "med pay" I keep hearing about?

A. "Med pay" is short for medical payments. It is North Carolina's little "test model" of No Fault insurance. It is not available on motorcycle policies but is available on many auto and home owner policies. It makes up a very small portion of your premium and pays the lesser amount of your medicals or the amount of the policy. It has no reimbursement rights and it is not related to fault. It is also available to anyone who is a family member living under the same roof. I recommend it and let me give some examples of why I recommend having it.

Example: You are backing out of your drive way and you have 3 passengers in your car. You run into your mailbox and everyone bangs their head on a window. They all want to get checked out at the hospital. Each visit cost $250. You don't want to pay $750 for your friends to get checked out. They don't want to pay $250 each to get checked out. You don't want them going after your liability coverage causing your premiums to go up. "Med pay" will pay each of those visits and not effect your premiums because it is not tied to fault.

Example: Your sister moves in with you. She is out with a friend in a friend's car and involved in an accident. Your "med pay" can be used by her. Remember, she is not on your insurance, she is not in your car the only connection is that she is a family member and lives in the same home. Again it does not make your premiums go up because it pays unrelated to fault.

Example: You are hit by another driver and have $1,000 in medical payments coverage and an $800 medical bill. You can pay the medical bill off with the "med pay" and then collect from the insurance from the person who hit you and not have to pay the "med pay" back. It basically added $800 to the value of your claim.

Yes, it is a little more complicated and can have some different results than I have related in the examples and that is why you should still retain me to help you!

The Carolina Rider is HOT!

It's too hot to ride.

When traffic lights brake my roll,

I melt into the asphalt steam rolling up and under my denim.

Heavy air, sizzling pavement

How can I wear all this gear?!

Early morning or late night rides are tolerable

Firey middays and afternoons must be avoided

My helmet stickers are falling off. My boot rubber is dripping on my pipes.

In January it was too cold

In March it was too wet

It's July and it's too hot,

too hot to ride.

But it's too hot to sit here on the couch too and I'm a Carolina Rider

And so I ride.

It has been hot, that can't be argued. The bike nites we attended last week were a little low in attendance and we're pretty sure the lure of the air conditioning was stronger than the pull of fellow riders. It's hard to stand around on a hot asphalt parking lot even if the beer is extra cold and the good times are especially sizzling.

The Carolina Rider will be around for bike nites and events at Quaker Steak in Concord, Buffalo Wild Wings in Gastonia, and McKoys in Charlotte this week - hot or not. And we'd love some fans to join us.......and by fans, I don't mean people who love us (as nice as that is to have!) ....but the kind that whirl around and keep us cool! Hope to see you at one of these hot times in the Carolinas....

Parker Brothers Choppers is taking over the space where Billy Lane used to be in Melbourne FL. And these bros from South Carolina are into doing the different and extreme from "scratch." Their slogan is "If you can dream it, we can build it" and when they do it, they do it BIG! Check out their latest big dream machine...Light Cycles from the new version of the old movie Tron on ebay. And, of course, big dreams come with big pricetags ($35,000 to get the chance at one of these very limited babies) but mean big coolness!

And as for truly cool.....check out this commercial for Old Spice!

Jimmy B shares "motorcycle wisdom" from cyberspace ...

Sometimes it takes a whole tank of fuel before you can think straight!

To last week's Question of the Week, Bob W. reminisced a bit........"Off the top of my head, I can think of Marcus Welby, M.D., Chips, and Along Came Bronson...   Every once in a while Sgt. Schultz would ride one in Hogan's Heros...  The Germans had bikes sometimes on Rat Patrol, as well...  and there were a couple of episodes in M*A*S*H*, but not many...  I'll have to keep thinking for some more!  Thanks for the question."

John B. responded: "How about the old series CHiPs??"

Winning is Fun!

Congrats to Susan Shingler, happy winner of a cool Bud cooler!

I love winning. I love giving good prizes away too and you can look for more fun give-aways from The Carolina Rider at more and more bike nites and rider events around The Carolinas.

We have some new sponsors of our website/online magazine. Jason E. Taylor, the LitiGATOR joined us this month. You'll get to know him through his Q&A corner once a month as in today's e-newsletter. We're very very happy to have this cigar-smokin' good attorney as part of The Carolina Rider family!

Welcome also to Dave Robinson who submitted a Ride Story this week. Check it out under Articles. And look for more Ride Stories by all of YOU in our upcoming new and improved homepage online coming sometime in the next week or so. Thanks, Dave, for sharing your story and pictures. Who else has a ride story to share? Please send pictures and stories to our Editor, Fancy Free!

Hooters of the Carolinas and Buffalo Wild Wings of Gastonia are new sponsors and we will have a presence at a number of their events. I popped by Hooters in Rock Hill this past Sunday and was happy to see folks out on a hot Sunday afternoon enjoying their food and live music plus a selection of vendors set up as well. This Thursday night we'll be in Gastonia at Buffalo Wild Wings and then again at Hooters on Saturday.

Come see us. You never know. You might just be a winner!

Until then, keep the shiney side up!!
