Some Cooling Images & Ideas

So the last several days have been great, huh? Degrees like October might give us and more than one breath of fresh air to revive our parched Summer spirits. Still, there's that little window of opportunity that suits the majority of riders most...... "can't be too hot or too cold, can't be too wet or too dry, can't be too bright or too dark, can't be too windy or too still,...." Well, I guess we all have our "can't be" lists. And as I always say, I applaud and tip my helmet to those of you who ride no-matter-what......

So we had a little break from the Southern Summer but the temp is headed back up. So when The Ride calls you - and you know IT will! - here are some cooling images and ideas for refreshment when the heat gets you down..... places you can ride to within The Carolinas. It's Summertime, afterall...time to take a little fun break somewhere .... even if just for an hour!

Waterfalls!

(above photo of a SC fall)

North and South Carolina have a good share of falling water. Here are a couple links and some pics too.

A Small Town Festival

There are others, of course, but this pic caught my eye

An Aquarium?

They've got an albino alligator at the SC Aquarium.....somethin' different..

A Cold One!

July 30th is Brew Bern Craft Beer Festival in New Bern, NC

Their website says "There will be 40+ craft breweries in attendance from around the country with an emphasis on the Carolinas and micro-breweries from the surrounding states offering over 100 beers."

A Place to Chill

There are tons of these great spots all around The Carolinas so this is just one of many....

The Purple Onion

in

Saluda, NC

A little train town with a lot of mountain character

The Purple Onion has live music, fresh foods, and a chill atmosphere most any time of the year.

Our Readers Share....

Got this press release this week that might be of interest to riders-in-recovery and all others who want to hear this guy tell his tales....

"A Roundtable Discussion of Motorcycles, Fellowship and Personal Journeys with James Hesketh"

James Hesketh, the author of RIDING A STRAIGHT AND TWISTY ROAD:
Motorcycles, Fellowship, and Personal Journeys, will visit Malaprop's Bookstore / Cafe, 55 Haywood St., Asheville, NC 28801 on August 1 from 5 to
6 p.m. He'll lead a discussion about the "straight and twisty" road he's traveled from addiction to recovery--his motorcycle with him every inch of the way. After the discussion, Mr. Hesketh will sign his books which will be available for sale.

I enjoyed seeing some of you guys who made it out this past Saturday to American Cycle Works for the I Remember Click Ride. Even tho it was misty, the cool air, good cause, and dedicated folks who put this event on brought out some enthusiastic riders.

I look forward this weekend to a couple events with more opportunities to meet old and new riding friends... Saturday's Open House at Mad Dog Custom Cycles in Lake Wylie, SC and Sunday's poker run for the Mark Bearden Family that ends at Coyote Joes.

May you all have a wonderful week......

A Report from Down South

It was great to hear from Wesley this weekend. He's been less actively writing for us since a new job and school have taken over a bigger chunk of his Zemplivin livin' but he's still doin' what he can as a part of our eclectic group of The Carolina Rider writers. Look for him now periodically in this new column, Zemplivin', found on occasion in The Carolina Rider Scene. Here's a little story he has to share from his involvement in a charity ride just South of The Carolinas.....

Cathy's Help Poker Run and Bike Show

Story and Photos by Wesley Ashley

I recently had the honor to help out with the first annual Cathy's Help Poker Run and Bike Show and what a success it was! For those of you not familiar with Cathy's Help here is a little info about it- Cathy's Help was started by Jeremy Johnson in memory of his mother who passed away from breast cancer in 2005. The goal of Cathy's Help is to help women battling cancer with every day expenses like house payments, light bills, heating and cooling costs, mammograms, pretty much whatever they are having a hard time paying for. It's a really great cause that is doing some great things for women who need it and I am proud to be a part of it.

Now back to the poker run and bike show. The poker run started out at Stone Mountain Harley Davidson in Conyers, GA. Registration started off slow but the closer it got to time for kickstands up the more riders that showed began to pull in. When it was time for everyone to ride out there were over 60 motorcycles waiting to take off. What an awesome sight it was seeing all off those bikes and motorcyclists there in support of Cathy's Help! While everyone took off on the run quite a few of us headed back over to the Whistle Post tavern in Old Town Conyers to get things setup for the Bike show. The Whistle Post was the final stop of the poker run and the site for the bike show. There were tons of great items that got raffled off and there was a silent auction too. A local rental company was even gracious enough to donate a dunk booth for the day. The dunk booth was a big hit and raised a good bit of money by itself. The fine people at the Whistle Post made sure that there was plenty of cold beer and hot food to satisfy the patrons. There were plenty of cool bikes and even some classic cars that were judged and then awarded trophies. The day went off without a hitch and when all was said and done and every dollar was counted over $4,000 was raised that day. That's $4,000 that will go directly to the women that need it. It really was a great day and a great event. Plans are already being made for next year's event and it's going to be bigger and better and will hopefully raise even more money for Cathy's Help. If you want to donate money or just keep up with what's going on with Cathy's Help then go to the website http://cathyshelp.blogspot.com. You can also keep up with happenings on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cathys-Help/173512725993874?ref=ts.

So until next time, do unto others as you would have them do unto you and keep on Zemplivin.

How you doin'?

Me ... I'm a little tuckered out.... had a really busy week last week. In fact, my life is pretty wide open and my hands are very full with the many many projects and enjoyments of The Carolina Rider and Satisfaction Marketing and Lake Wylie Music Fest and The Big Ride and all those other things that come in between like eating and sleeping and taking out the garbage. I can tell my life is hectic because it's been a couple weeks since I had a chance to ride my bike. I either needed to take the bus somewhere or the job called for more of a truck run. Don't get me wrong - I have a terrific life. Just a very full schedule. (And so, if I miss calling you back please give me a kick in the tail and remind me that you're out there waiting. I do look forward to connecting with you...)

Thanks Jane!

I want to thank Jane LaVoy for covering the events at Moorseville Dragway in recent months. Her latest article about the Lee's Performance Bike Bash gives you a great taste of what her experience has been. Thanks Jane! And thanks to Neville and the whole Lee's Performance crew for being a part of The Carolina Rider!

This Week (in no particular order)

This weekend I'll be hanging out at Mad Dog Custom Cycles in Lake Wylie, SC for their Open House that we are helping make happen. Come on down! You'll enjoy the folks who work for and hang out at Mad Dog Plaza as well as my friends The Wiggle Wagons who are playing.

Sunday The Big Ride will be at McKoys for the start of the ride for Mark Bearden and Family then over to Coyote Joes for the end party.

We'll be giving away a night in the NC mountains and some other cool prizes.

I will drive The Big Ride over to bike nite at Quaker Steak and Lube in Concord, NC Wednesday evening, of course, and hope for less rain than last week.

Hoping to hang out with you at one or all of these events.

Last Weekend

I regret that due to some technical issues I don't have photos from my own camera from this past Saturday's "I Remember Click" ride. Does anyone else out there have some we can put in our Gallery? Thanks to Carolina Thunder and American Cycle Works for a very well planned event. Nice to see all of you who made it out!
