Happy Holiday!

So next week we'll be publishing The Carolina Rider Scene on Tuesday as we're taking Monday off to celebrate our labors ... and suspect and hope you are too! The weather report for next Monday is 83 and partly cloudy so let's get out and ride as our celebration, shall we?!

September's Here

and I'm going to The Outer Banks - How 'bout you?

It's been on my list for about as long as I remember. I guess when we read in elementary school about the wild horses and the Wright Brothers and saw photos of the natural coastal areas, I was inspired and hoped someday to visit. Oh, and there was that movie with Richard Gere and Diane Lane set there too! And so it is with happy anticipation that I look forward to going for the 2012 NC State HOG Rally being held in The Outer Banks! It'll be a really loooong drive in THE BIG RIDE; (The big ol' gal ain't known for her speed and we'll be dragging a bike trailer too!,) but I've got all fingers crossed that the trip will be at least a small glimmer of what I've imagined.

The rally is just 4 weeks away. Are you going? I'm pretty sure there's some spectacular riding opportunities - a coastal flipside to the mountain areas where many riders gravitate in the Carolinas. Sure, it'll be smack in the middle of hurricane season but let's all hope for favorable weather. Browsing about online I found these Outer Banks webcams. Check out what's happening there right now, get inspired yourself, and then see about making your plans to join The Carolina Rider crew for the rally!

"There's too much Confusion, I can't get no relief!"

* Beginning today, 8/27/12, your Event Flyers must have TCR Logo *

(Enjoy a little Hendrix - click on the link to "There's too much confusion..." above and listen to Jimi as you read on......)

Oh my! I still seem to be confusing everyone with what we're asking you to do in order to get your flyer in Readerville. Because I truly WANT to help all of you and because new procedures take time to get in place, I have been putting flyers in that haven't fulfilled our request to include our logo. Sadly, after today, I will be unable to publish your flyer if it does not have our logo on it. It's not that we're being difficult. It's that ...

  1. we want to show that we support you and

  2. we're giving you advertising "in trade" for you showing your support of The Carolina Rider.

It's really a very even exchange of mutual support that costs neither one of us a penny and we're providing you the logo art to place in your flyer art. Remember, any not-for-profit event can have your flyer posted in Readerville (below) in this weekly e-Magazine that goes out to around 56,000 readers each week. (I know, not news - I've shared it before but I'm saying it again!)

So, to be clear, here's how it works: We ask that you add our logo to your flyers and other marketing/advertising materials (print and online) which shows that we are your marketing partner. We want to be known as a supporter of your caring and fun community efforts! And we appreciate all you do in our Carolina Communities.

It was a joy to see new and old friends Saturday at both events we were a part of. Thanks for coming up to speak and give me such great feedback! It was fun seeing everyone enjoying themselves - especially those of you who grabbed a quick seated massage at The BIG RIDE! Caroline is a wonderful massage therapist, huh?!

Many congrats to all who won tickets to Toby Keith. Blue Ridge Harley definitely gets the BEST ATTENDANCE award for the most bikes in the ride to the show having about 50 bikes ride down from Hickory to meet up with the riders from H-D of Charlotte. Hope everyone had fun at the show.

Saturday's winner of a Night at Maggie Valley Inn is

Lisa Bullock

Congrats!

Dams and Deer

Charley Rippy and I took a day off and rode around the Morganton, NC area Friday. Met for breakfast at the Forest City Diner in Forest City NC and headed out on Cherry Mountain Rd from there ....

Up Pea Ridge Rd to US 64 and then turn on Camp Creek Rd. What a great road, nice views, beautiful curves that are sometimes pretty tight and other times sweeping in their runs. Camp Creek connected onto Centennial, which is another of North Carolina's wonderful motorcycling roads. Centennial led us to Union Mills, NC and onto US 221. Before many miles we turned onto Polly Spouts Rd and on to Vein Mountain Rd. This road, besides connecting US 221 and NC 226 at Dysartsville, NC, has a very unique element that I'm not going to divulge here. Suffice to say that all who have taken over this road have been amazed at what they saw. To a person they remark, "What is this doing here?" Find this road on your map, fire up your trusty ride and check it out. You're gonna be amazed too.

Charley and I rode up NC 226 to US 70 near Marion, NC, turned our bikes East toward Morganton and found the N Powerhouse Rd near Lake James - just what we'd been looking for: a road that neither one of us had ridden! And a good one it was. It twists and turns as it follows the contours of Lake James, with glimpses of the lake through the trees and blue vistas of water as the road runs along its side. Then you cross the dam and see the power house the road is named for. Powerhouse Rd T's into NC 126 and we joined it to turn onto Fish Hatchery RD; a premier cycle road that can satisfy the crotch rocket jockey to the laid back cruiser. I got a couple of thrills I wasn't looking for on this road.... Coming around a right hand curve I nearly T-boned a pickup backing out of a farm lane, lost a couple of thousand miles off my front tire and a few more gray hairs. Then 2 or so miles further on as I came around a curve, there in the side ditch was a doe and her fawn. She looked me over and jumped out in front of me with the fawn following Mama. There went a couple more thousand miles from my squealing front tire!!

Fish Hatchery T's onto NC 181, which knowledgeable riders know is the one to judge all others by. We rode up 181 to Christa's restaurant at Pineola NC. Wonderful lunch was had, topped off with Christa's cherry cobbler a la mode. Then back down the mountain to home. Me to Gaffney, SC and Charley to Lincolnton. NC. But the "good" times were not over, on a day with no rain forecast, I ran into a cloudburst just south of Morganton and Charley had the same fate on I-40 east to Hickory. For some reason that morning I threw my rain coat into the passenger trunk on my Yamaha FZ1, but Charley did not!

Let that be a lesson - never leave home without your rain coat...

The Red White and Brew, 2012

Well, if you did not make it to the The Red White and Brew this past Saturday at H-D of Charlotte you missed a really good event. Lots of good unique vendors and Bubba Blackwell Stunt show. WOW it was a good time. Best of all Budweiser gave away another incredible bike to a non-rider this year. Now a newbie will get to know the pleasure of riding! Be sure and mark your calendar for this event next August as Sandy Pullin at H-D of Charlotte and Budweiser are bound to throw an even better party next year!

Toby Keith Winners and Riders

On Saturday we also had the ride to the Toby Keith concert at Verizon. The people who rode in the ride got a chance to meet and greet Toby. Say hello to the "meet and greet" winners below. This year we did something a little different as we had Blue Ridge Harley and H-D of Charlotte selling special tickets just for The Carolina Rider and the Blue Ridge HOG group really showed up the Charlotte HOG group in their participation. I personally know that the Charlotte group will never stand for being second place and next year I am sure the race will be ON! Congrats to all who won and enjoyed the show. We look forward to doing that concert and other shows as well again. Stay tuned folks!

Sideways

I couldn't help stealing the picture below from someone's Facebook posting. It looks like a really nasty ride Remember most single vehicle motorcycle accidents happens because people ride too HOT into a curve ... so don't be like this guy!!!
