The Colors are Coming!

"The Autumn Leaves drift by the window ..." (For your listening pleasure: Nat King Cole's version ... or Eva Cassidy's beautiful rendition!)

Welcome to Autumn. Today, the Autumnal Equinox, where I am is an overcast, slightly rainy day with a gentle Fall cool in the air. Ahhh...Autumn. Like a denim jacket pulled out of the closet to throw off the chill or those corduroy jeans I haven't had on since last year, Autumn brings me a snuggly comfort and richly-hued inspiration. This time of year can brim over with the show of blinding color and new light but it also tends to be rather soothing to me. Rustle and hush, leaves fall and pile up; skidding on the roads we pass and crunching in our steps. Ahh... Autumn. May you find some brightly colored-peace in this new season too!

As the Equinox turns, the seasonal shelves at Target and Walmart have been completely cleared of all back-to-school supplies and Halloween's goolish masks and orange candles are set out before us; the weather forecast shows nothing above the 70's for highs in my area for the next week; and we have received our first toy run flyer this week. Amazing! I'm still wondering where August went and now September is leaving and the holiday plans are underway in the biker world. Wow!

... and so are the Toy Runs!

Over the last couple of years, I've seen an increase in toy runs and other cool weather rides all over The Carolinas. Where once upon a time November and December had little to offer our EVENTS CALENDAR, these days there's more to choose from. So if you're planning a late Fall/early Winter event, your friends at The Carolina Rider recommend getting the word out sooner rather than later so that folks can get their plans made.

I can't believe I'm even talking about holiday stuff yet but once we pass into Autumn, it's ON! The stores will soon be playing carols, you know....

I'm on Facebook ... "friend me!"

THE WALL

On Veterans Day 1996, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund unveiled a half-scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., designed to travel to communities throughout the United States. The Wall That Heals has visited more than 350 cities and towns throughout the nation.

The traveling exhibit, known as The Wall That Heals, allows the many thousands of veterans who have been unable to cope with the prospect of facing The Wall to find the strength and courage to do so within their own communities, thus allowing the healing process to begin.  As on The Wall, the names on The Wall That Heals are listed by day of casualty.

THE MOBILE MUSEUM

Information cases display photos of service members whose names are found on The Wall, along with letters and memorabilia left at The Wall in D.C. The Museum also includes a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the conflict in Vietnam.

The exhibits tell the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era surrounding the conflict, and are designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a historical and cultural context.

Who doesn’t love a motorcycle ride to the NC mountains?  Especially when the weather registers in the 70 degree range…count me in!  But an even better reason to ride towards Asheville, NC: the scheduled Ride for Kids, Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation fundraiser.

My dad and I have participated in this ride over the years.  It is a well-organized and excellent fundraising event.  Kudos to the staff and volunteers from the area that makes this ride happen!  The most important part of the event was meeting the “Stars”.  These young men and women are survivors or currently undergoing treatment for brain tumors.  One young man I met had recently gotten married and over time they were able to conceive and welcome a beautiful young son to their family.  Another young man aged 5 years was recently diagnosed with a tumor.  He was innocently excited to be participating on the ride along with his mom.  As we walked towards his VIP Escort’s motorcycle, he grew more excited to meet his driver and ride along in the sidecar with his mom.

Rain threatened the ride but held off long enough for completion of the event.  My dad and I headed for home afterwards and Mother Nature managed to wash some sweat away for about an hour into our trip.
Another dad-daughter road trip added to the books.  Autumn is around the corner….time for some really nice orange-yellow-gold leaf season riding.

Ride safe and ride long!

Oct 4th Shriners' Ride

I don't know how many of you know that I'm a Shriner. I have been for many, many years. I was really pleased when MetLife Premier Group of the Carolinas agreed to be a major sponsor of the Shriners charity. The Shriners wear a very stupid little hat but they do a world of good for Children with their Childrens Hospitals. Read this press release the MetLife folks put together.

When I tell you this will be a big deal, I mean it.

Take a listen. This is the radio spot that's going to be on WRFX about the ride, (altough this may not be the final cut as we are still working on the final verision but this will be close. to what is aired.)

And did I mention that the "Harley-Davidson LiveWire Event" is at Harley-Davidson of Charlotte that same weekend? Sign up for our charity ride and you can compete for a chance to ride the H-D ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE! Cool, huh? ...

Put it on your schedule, Oct the 4th. MetLife's new headquarters in Ballantyne is the start. We are going to have a blast!
