A Letter from The President of Texas Motor Speedway

Regarding Ride to Victory

By Eddie Gossage, President of Texas Motor Speedway

I love racing. Been in NASCAR for more than 30 years and one of the great blessings has been a long friendship with NASCAR star Kyle Petty. As a result of that friendship, I've ridden tens of thousands of miles on a motorcycle alongside of him, marveling at that famous smile, his tender care for children, and the silly things we've seen, done and encountered along the way.

This Sunday, you can do the same thing: helping kids and riding with us and other NASCAR figures on one of this country's most beautiful routes.

The ninth annual Ride to Victory in honor of Click Baldwin is one of the great motorcycle rides of the year in North Carolina. Cool air, a chance to visit with old friends and make new friends and a parade of motorcycles miles long.

Ride to Victory benefits the Victory Junction Gang Camp, which is a free year-round camping facility serving children with chronic medical conditions and serious illnesses.  It was founded in honor of the late Adam Petty, who died in a racing accident ten years ago. I get emotional about the loss of Adam and over the silver lining that is the Victory Junction Gang Camp every time I visit there.

This year's route starts at zMAX Dragway, located across the road from famed Charlotte Motor Speedway, which will host the Bank of America 500 Saturday night.  After a run down the unique four-lane drag strip, riders will head to see the beautiful turning leaves in the mountains of western North Carolina and a lap around scenic Lake Lure before concluding at Harley-Davidson of Asheville.

"There is nothing more fun than riding down mountain roads as the leaves turn, hearing all of the motorcycles, seeing the smiles on the faces of all the riders and helping kids from all around the country," said Kyle Petty, former NASCAR star and founder of the ride.  "I love to see all my old friends and enjoy meeting so many new people.  The ride around Lake Lure is going to be beautiful and Asheville has always been friendly when we've brought motorcycle rides through there before.  I'm ready to crank my bike and hit the road."

Former Daytona 500 winner Geoff Bodine; retired NASCAR star Harry Gant; former University of North Carolina and NBA superstar-turned-ESPN broadcaster Brad Daugherty; Country Music Association award-winner video-producer George Flanigen; and, of course, me will participate.

The ride is in memory of legendary Harley-Davidson enthusiast Click Baldwin, one of Kyle's (and my) closest friends.  Click tragically died in a motorcycle accident in 2008 in Montana.  He served on the Board of Directors for the Kyle Petty Charity Ride organization and was owner of Carolina Harley-Davidson in Gastonia, N.C.  We miss him while laughing about the things we all did together over the years.

Registration is $45 in advance, $55 the day of the ride.  All riders will receive a commemorative T-shirt, decal, collectible pin and lunch.  Pre-registration can be made by calling (704) 714-4545 or by visiting

The ride departs zMAX Dragway at 9:30am.

October and the Ridin' is Sweeeet!

Just enough warm, just enough cool. I was out Saturday scooting around to some events in The Queen City and didn't want to get off my bike even when I was so wonderfully tired at the end of the day.

I hope you too are enjoying some of this Carolina Autumn on the back of your two-wheeled friend.....

Time to share some of those freebies I've recently come across as well as a few Autumn riding ideas in North and South Carolina.....

Send in your BEST ride photos. We're going to compile a slideshow accompanied by the Louis Armstrong song "What a Wonderful World." Get your photo in The Carolina Rider slideshow! It will be on our website permanently and featured in The Carolina Rider Scene for several weeks.

Here's what we're looking for....

  • beautiful, touching, inspiring, moving, playful, happy, joy-filled scenes
  • shots must have a motorcycle or part of a motorcycle (or more than one motorcycle) in the shot (a photo that shows a rearview mirror for instance counts as a part of the bike)
  • show us YOUR PERSPECTIVE - what you see and love to see on your rides! - express yourself!
  • the more creative and original you are, the better your chance of getting in the slideshow

if you have questions, contact me

Cue the music ... ENJOY!

A small group of us rode this part Saturday up to the Billy Graham Library participating in the Samaritans Purse ride. There were  45 of us that left Taylors and met up with a few hundred more at the Library. The folks there at the BGL treated us all like royalty, showing us around, giving away free T-shirts, and even feeding us fresh cooked hotdogs and hamburgers.

We were there for about 3 hours and the place is absolutely stunning. If you have never seen it, it is well worth the time to visit. Samaritans Purse is also a great charity to give to as it brings Christmas and God's love to kids all around the world.

Use a little Horse Sense ...

Last week I tried a non-motorcycle case for one of my motorcycle buddies. Long story short, a guy shot his horses and he wanted to recover damages. Actually, it was more than that, . . the guy had offered to buy his horses after he shot them (bird shot with a shotgun) but said he was going to put them down. My client would not sell to him because he did not want the horses killed ..., they could still live "a horse's life." I guess this was my client's way of teaching the other guy a lesson - a legal lesson, the kind you do not go to jail for teaching.

Anyhow, I was raised with horses, so I was pissed and happy to help teach the lesson. And so when just before trial an offer was made to settle, we basically said "screw you" and tried the case. We won about five times more than was offered.

Moral of the story: it is okay to be angry and fight back ... but do it legally so you don't end up in jail yourself, and the victory can still be "oh so sweet...."

Stay Vertical,

I'd be happy to answer YOUR legal questions ... Write me!

A Little bit of This and a Little bit of That

I have been teaching an MSF class today. That always gets me thinking. It's very sad to lose one of our riding friends. Be they close or distant it still saddens the heart to hear we lost one of our fellow riders. So Instructor Jon says, "pay attention out there! You can't let your guard down for even a minute. I would much rather talk bad about you with you here alive than to say great things about you at a funeral."

Fall is here ... great riding weather for the next couple of months. So, get out there and get some seat time. One of my buddies invited me to ride with him to westeren NC mountains Thursday. I'm going, provided the weather is good. So, cross your fingers for me!

Toy runs are on the horizion. How 'bout let's meet up at 6 or 10 of them in the next couple of months?....
