Winner of Lester's firsts

Lester stirred up some folks to explore his story about Biketoberfest and figure out how many "firsts" he mentioned in what he called his Story of Firsts. Robbie was the winner. There were 12 "firsts" in the tale of what happened to Lester and friends in their Daytona Biketoberfest experience this year. And here's the thing, everybody: you gotta keep watching your magazine, The Carolina Rider Weekly Magazine, for opportunities to win, to share, to be part of this cool ride we call The Carolina Rider!

You're Invited to Share your Tales, your Photos,

14th Annual Vets Christmas Charity Ride

Our "Orangeburg Ron" eagerly attended an organizing meeting for this upcoming holiday ride and wants to encourage all who can to join The Carolina Rider for this big annual ride in support of veterans at Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, SC.

This picture is of my father taken from the Collier’s Time Life Photographic History of WWII.  He was waiting to land on D-Day as the caption says.  He didn’t make it uninjured and lost his knee cap (wore a big brace the rest of his short life), lost part of his kidney (this was before dialysis as it is today) and was wounded in one other place.  He only lived to age 39 and passed away in 1959 when I was almost 11.  Now what does this have to do with Carolina Rider you may ask.  Well, on October 29 I attended an organizational meeting for the Vet’s Christmas Charity Ride to be held December 14, 2014 in Columbia.  I was very young when my father passed, but he spent time in the VA hospital in Ann Arbor (the other side of the state in Michigan and away from home (it was also before interstates)).  I’ve had to spend Christmas away from home and family and it isn’t fun.  We can change that or at least lessen the impact for many vets that are homeless or in the hospital this Christmas.

I attended a planning meeting of the annual Vets' Chrismas Charity Ride that provides some support to veterans at Dorn VA Hospital in Columbia, SC and was impressed with those involved. There's a devoted group who make this happen but, as with all charitable events, YOU are needed to make it all worthwhile. Check out the flyer above and the list of suggestions that are needed for donation. They need robes, socks, hats, gloves, sweatshirts, sweatpants, t-shirts underwear, candy, back packs, phone cards, radios/ipods/ipads, toiletries, and just those things that most of us take for granted each day.   I understand that Carolina Chrome is stuffing a bus, so if you are in the Columbia area and can’t make the ride, drop off some items in the bus, or at Carolina Honda Powerhouse or one of the 23 locations of the All South Credit Union.  100% of proceeds, including cash, go to the vets.  Nothing goes to anyone or for any purpose other than going directly to the vets that are homeless or in the Dorn VA Hospital.

The meeting was impressive; over 35 people attended and were hosted by All American Heating and Air.  There were riding groups, Buffalo Soldiers, VFW, American Legion in attendance as organizers and sponsors of the event. For the ride, Boy Scouts Troop 324 will provide the food.  All advertising is sponsored or donated and all food and drinks are sponsored or donated.  This is the 14th year and many said last year was the best ever.  They raised $23,768.00 in money and valued items and all was given out.  The ride will have a police escort and starts at 2:00 p.m. from Carolina Honda Powerhouse and then goes to Dorn VA (right off I-77 by Garner’s Ferry.)  They will have various military vehicles and I heard even a Cobra helicopter may be on display.

The mission is to promote Christmas for the veterans and have a motto of “If we don’t bring it, They don’t get it!”  They will have food and drinks at the Carolina Honda Powerhouse location and at the Dorn VA location as well as a band (“Blue Box 50” if I got the name right.)  The ride is rain or shine, and I understand they had around 1,000 bikes show up last year.  So check out the flyer and if you can’t attend (I know it is Sunday and church and all, but,) at least send a donation or drop off a gift.  You can check out their website at Of course, the Big Ride 2, The Phoenixwill be at the start!  So among all the other rides, toy runs, donation opportunities, take an opportunity to pay back a little for all that we have because of our veterans.

The Carolina Rider Welcomes a New Advertiser!

Chris Petner has been into leather since the mid-80's. Whether it's wearable leathers or upholstered leather, vinyl, or other fabrics, Chris knows how to make and re-make what you want.  In these photos you can see boat and car seats he's re-done .. but what might be even more pertinent for us motorcycle folks are the bike seats, saddlebags, jackets, vests, patches, and such that he works with and how he is focused on that custom look you're dreaming about.
Years back, just after a high school party in his home state of New Jersey, a guy asked to see him about a job.  He told him to learn how to use a sewing machine, that he was needed and could do it.  He did and he worked hard at it too. One year later, that same guy told him to learn to fix the machine. These early nudges by a supportive employer led him to become the regional manager of an aftermarket leather manufacturer and his life in leatherworks took off.
Upon coming to the Carolinas in 1994, Chris wanted to strike out on his own, doing what his hands knew so well from the early days in Jersey. He wanted to create stuff out of leather, to help people express what they've got in their heads and to renew old work into refreshed splendor; and so Top Stitch Customs was born!  Check out this list of possibilities from Chris and Top Stitch:

Top Stitch Customs
