Shootin’ the breeze - article by Wesley Ashley. Photos by HairBraine.

While helping out at a benefit bike show the other weekend I had the chance to check out a book called ‘Pinups on Two Wheels’ by HairBraine. I have always been fascinated by the pinup models of yesteryear and the hotrods and death machines that they posed beside. Nothing gets my gears grinding like seeing a beautiful woman standing next to a two wheeled time machine. If you feel the same way, then I have just the book for you. ‘Pinups on Two Wheels’ is a collection of photos by the artist John Switzer “HairBraine”; a helluva artist, photographer, graphic designer and all around cool dude. I had the chance to shoot the breeze with him and ask him a few questions. So take a few minutes and read the interview then go to his website and buy the book, you won’t regret it.

TCR: How did you get your start in photography and design, what’s your story?

HairBraine: “First and foremost I’m an artist. I like to recycle things I see and touch and turn them into useful pieces of art. I’m really into painting. I have painted everything from trains, walls, bridges, rooftops and canvas. I’m also into sculpting, photography, graphic design, tattoo, powder coating and screen printing. I have been a graphic designer for 13 years. I am also a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta.”

TCR: Where did the name HairBraine come from?

HairBraine: “I got hurt in a high speed wheelie motorcycle accident in the mountains. While laid up on pain pills I had the idea to do the book. My wife jokingly said “You have the most “HairBraine” ideas” and instantly the name of my company was born.”

TCR: Tell us about ‘Pinups on Two Wheels.’

HairBraine: “The book is my own take at pinup style photography. I have always loved the pinups of the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. Also the choppers and bobbers of those years played a major role as well. I set out to shoot 60 girls with these “maniac machines” that dudes were building in their shops and garages. That’s what ‘Pinups on Two wheels’ is about.”

TCR: Are you an avid motorcycle rider and if so what role do they play in your life?

HairBraine: “Motorcycles have always been a huge part of my life. I’ve been riding since I was 14, from dirt bikes to street bikes. Now I ride a bobbed out Harley Davidson. I ride almost every day.”

TCR: Who do you look up to or admire?

HairBraine: “I look up to people that make shit with their hands, people who fix things, people that work for themselves and make their own money. Anyone that rides two wheels and actually rides; these are people I look up to.”

TCR: Any advice?

HairBraine: “Advice….. Ride hard! F**k Hard!”

TCR: After all is said and done what do you want to be remembered for?

HairBraine: “I want to be remembered in the art world. I want to be remembered and respected as an artist. I want my logo to be well known. I want my books to stack on people’s shelves and my art to hang on people’s walls. I want to inspire someone that I will never meet.  I would also like to be remembered as a good husband and a great father.”

TCR: Is there anything you would like to plug?
